New Job, Who Dis?

Started a new job recently and here are random observations about starting off as a creative in a new company:

  • I'm in my current role because of the personal projects that make up a bulk of my portfolio. So I'm telling you now: make time to pursue passion projects. Having one will help keep you excited about being a designer and also (bonus!) may provide you work that you can include into your portfolio. Just find something to focus on, start where you are now and don't worry about making the work perfect.

  • Talk. Make your voice heard.

  • Put yourself in front of others whether in person or via Zoom. You need to be seen in order to be remembered, especially as a rookie. Again, don't be afraid to talk.

  • Research. I recently had a meeting with a peer. I let her do all the talking because I didn't prepare for the meeting. If I could redo it, I would have planned for the meeting with my questions lined up. I'm super terrible at doing things on the fly. More power to you if you're able to do that (but also, imagine how unstoppable you'd be if you planned ahead).

Passing along in case this helps you navigate your first 30 days on the job.

Image above: I'm taking the Cinema4D Ascent course with School of Motion. The course is very much a time commitment but I'm enjoying it (and the time flies). The instructor EJ Hassenfratz is a motha f-ing rockstar. Check out his other courses on School of Motion (he also has tutorials on his YouTube channel which were immensely helpful during my first year with C4D). In any case, the image above is the Week 1 homework assignment focused on the volume building and a little bit of RedShift we learned this week.
